Default Finding a good weight when older....

When I was working in the medical field I noticed that many people didn't pay attention to the "ideal weight" for their age. Women were especially hard on themselves, using the weight for someone under 40 as their goal.

How does someone figure out their ideal weight in a reasonable fashion?

Is it better to use the other healthy female family members as a guide to what ideal weight is for you?

You can use a BMI calculator and enter your height, weight, and age.

I'm not sure that the chart can really tell a person their ideal weight. Like BeFit4Free said a BMI calculator might be a better option. Not to mention that bone density and size have to be factored in as well. Also if someone does have large muscles, they may weight more than is reccommended and still be in great health.

I think the BMI is a helpful scale but I also think that being at a weight you are comfortable with is a key factor. I personally like my weight at a little higher than what is optimally calculated by BMI.
BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / (Height in inches) x (Height in inches) ) x 703
I think the goal is between 23 and 25

I'm still pretty young, but I take height and muscle mass into perspective a lot. I'm at a stage right now where I'm trying to gain weight and bulk up.

I find if you eat healthy and exercise regularly, you shouldn't be too concerned about weight. (Of course unless you find yourself really overweight.)

While I am only 5ft tall I have a larger bone structure than most. I have always had trouble with weight since I had my children. However, none of the charts seem to be appropriate for my bone structure.

The best way to determine the proper body weight for your self is to go to a local gym and have a trainer test your body fat percentage. This way you know that you're not using a one-size-fits-all body weight goal.

I've never gotten my body fat percentage tested, but I know my brother did it and he was only around 9% haha.

I know someone who has to be somewhere close to zero!

Bodybuilders get down to around 3-5% body fat (on the day of contest ONLY) and you start to have health problems if you keep your body fat below 6% for too long.
I searched 5% body-fat bodybuilder on google and this is the first picture that came up: (This is a guy who is probably around 5% body fat.)
